In 1999 Mark Barnett a spice trader built a house for his holiday/week end, a family house (the main building facing the sea). Back at the time the island was not a tourist destination but a pepper and fish sauce production area. Roads were dirt tracks and electricity only working 1 or 2 hours per day. The perfect spot to escape from the bustling Hanoi where his company is located. He was enjoying their family time and invited few diplomats from different countries to enjoy family gathering as well out of the world (Beach House 1 and 2).
One of this diplomat said to Mark, “Why don’t you build a resort there it’s the perfect spot, location on the sea, west coast for sunsets beautiful natural gardens and a preserved island”.
Then in 2005 Mark decided to open the Cassia Cottage in reference to Cassia which is the type of cinnamon grown in Northern Vietnam that he is exporting all over the world. But he always kept the spirit of a family house and not a standardized hotel. Cassia is a home to us and we hope it will be to you too.
